The Tofino Mudflats & Bird Sanctuary
July 21st, 2009 "Last evening just before dark, a flock of 19 or so Great Blue Heron flew in all at once and roosted in the treetops on the island across from us. When the tide came up enough, they all drifted down out of the trees to fish for a few hours. They will now stay until late fall."

The village of Tofino borders the second most important fly-way for migrating birds on the Southern British Columbia coast. More than 100 bird species frequent the inlet waters and outside beaches for feeding, rest and shelter. The inter-tidal and estuarine waters provide valuable nutrients as well as act as a nursery for young salmon and other marine species. These tidal mud-flats are recognized as invaluable habitat and are a provincially designated protected area.

The Red Crow Guesthouse has an unsurpassed vista overlooking the Bird Sanctuary and offshore islands. Bring your spotting scope and binoculars and enjoy hours of pleasure watching the ever-changing tidal waterways and the many bird and animal species that reside, forage and rest here.
